Well I compiled pine 4.44 okay after all... Earlier I tried to figure out what to do about ssl, and evidently made incorrect decisions. I tried it again and just omitted any reference to it, and with the 'slx' target instead of 'lnx' it compiled without error. hip hip hooray!
