Between each release of a new kernel version there are interum releases. If Linus is releasing the interum patches they are labelled linux-2.4.next-releaseprex or linux-2.4.10pre5 for instance. If Alan Cox is releasing them they are linux-2.4.9acx for patch levels. There are three or four developers releasing interum patches. Every couple of releases Linus links up with the other developers and includes the other patches in the prexxx as does Alan with the acxx.
