turning cds into mp3 format.

Well, you still need to rip them as that is the process to extract the
content from the CD. I don't know about cdparanoia, but most rippers I've
had any dealing with extract the content and leave it as a .wav file on
the hard disk. You most definitely would want to convert these .wav files
to mp3 or ogg to save space. Mp3's are on average one tenth the size of
the .wav counterpart.
