I am having no difficulty with my audio output arrangement here, and have done nothing to create or modify any groups for my sound devices. On my system, /dev/dsp and /dev/audio are symbolic links with 777 permissions; they are linked to /dev/dsp1 and /dev/audio1 which have 666 permissions.
