Hi Jonathan: You don't need to do a make clean unless you are doing major changes. After doing make config you do make dep then make bzImage. You really should read the the linux kernel README in the /usr/src/linux directory. Without knowing what it tells you in dmesg it is impossible to recommend what may have gone wrong for you the first time.
