You can only run synths you have built-in to the kernel at compile time. If it is a production kernel i.e. from a distribution then all synths are built-in at compile time. The lilo command line switch is: linux speakup_synth=whatever You can also use the speakup_ser option to force a given serial port. If you give the string "none" instead of a synth the kernel will turn speakup off and not probe for a synth.
