The server looks at the requested domain and responds accordingly. Many hosting companies will allow you to take advantage of this directing a "parked" domain name to point to a directory within your site. As a side note, until Microslop went to version 5 of its web server this was not supported. You had to multihome a machine to allow two web sites on the same box. They finally got it so you didn't shortly before winblows 2k. That was considered a show stoping feature of the version.
