As for the memory available for storage, it is short on the main
board. But... I think Linux can support the pcmcia flash meory cards which
have pretty good capacity. And as for the speculation on the hard drives,
that depends. If they include a type 3 slot, you can get a drive to
fit. But it will be expensive.

But to give some real world idea of expansion:
A 32 MB compact flash card runs around $45 right now at CDW.
A 128 MB compact flash card is about $110.
A 256 MB card can be had for $330.
