I had something similar to your problem with kernel 2.4.2 and alsa 0.5.10. In my case, everything went fine, but the /dev/dsp device could not be accessed by anything. So, I got the version of the ossfree driver that supports the modem function from cmedia's sight, switched to kernel 2.2.18 since that driver wouldn't compile for 2.4.2, and use that instead. Greg
