Well, it isn't totally a raw path.  But for the most part you can treat
it that way.  It converts newlines to either nulls or returns.  I
don't remember which right off-hand.  Come to think about it, I don't
remember a lot of things about it.  The first thing to go you know is
your memory and I can't remember what's second.
