If you upgrade the Kernel, you must _also_ upgrade the PCMCIA utilities or your PCMCIA support breaks. Your current PCMCIA modules are probably compiled and configured for kernel 2.2.x and 2.4.x changed some things along the way and you need new pcmcia-tools packages.
