sometimes it's a very long while, when I first installed I rebooted a couple
of times when using the downloaded root and boot disks. this isn't the way
you can expect it to work after all the install happens though. Also I use a
transport in dos and linux and when switching over from dos I have to shut
down the synth and turn it on to get a complete initialization before
speakup will speak to me.

I wonder if your failure to get speech when booting is because of one
or more of the following:

(1) You booted your DOS system with speech loaded and then tried to
    run loadlin -- the speakout has a problem with this.

The other possibility which comes to mind is that you are not doing
the corrrect boot sequence which is to boot the disk, wait till it
stops going, hit enter and then you hear the disk for a while and then
it should start talking.
