USB scanners and linux

Does this mean you have to run X in order to use it?  If it is just
libraries, how does one run the application?  Does the scanner somehow
invoke these library functions?  It just doesn't quite add up to me <dumb>:)

In Linux I found one package that is in alpha. It is GOCR (or JOCR) The
system is actually libraries though they have screenshots of some front
end for it. The catch is the frontend they offeer screen shots on is X
Windows based.
