Much better and more predictable to use tab completion to do this. cd /home/bob<TAB> Will either complete the name for you or beep. If you hit it a second time, it will display all matching options (confirming if there's lots of them), or beep again, meaning that there are no matches. It will automatically deal with things like escaping spaces and so forth. I love this feature.
