Hi, Matt Campbell has written a modified Doubletalk server for emacspeak that uses /dev/synth with speakup. We don't have the complete support for all stty ioctl() commands written in for the /dev/synth device yet but it's coming at some point in the future. Contact Matt about the modified speech server.
