Is this an attack on my machine? How can you know for sure?

The mark messages occurr every 15 or 30 or 45 or 60 minutes or
whenever you set them. They are used to show that syslog is still
running and working; especially useful for network syslogs if you don't get a mark
message from a remote host it might be unreachable.
