If you want the modem to work with Linux, make sure that it's a hardware modem and not a winmodem. It's more expensive then a winmodem is, but it's less of a hassle to set it up. There are winmodems that work under Linux such as the lucent modem and supposedly some modems with the Pctel chip set. I haven't had the chance to use the Lucent modem, but I know that there people on this list which use them. As for the Pctel modem ... if you've been following the list at all in the last 2 to 3 months, you should get an idea on how hard they are to set up based on my posts--I never got the driver to work with mine. About two weeks ago, I got a 3com hardware PCI modem part number 2976. It works perfectly for me with Linux and Windows, and it cost me around $70 or so. You can find a list of supported winmodems under linux on http://www.linmodems.org . They also give you links to Linux drivers for the supported modems that they mention. Hope this helps somewhat.
