Actually Jack I would telnet to the ports like so. telnet 192.168.1.2 25 You will see what is happening pretty quickly. The inetd.conf file lives in /etc and it usually is the one responsible for getting mail and telnet running. Depending on how your system is configured mail may more may not run under inetd.
