I have booted a machine with speakup installed (using Doubletalk synth) and booted a number of times without the synth attached. I didn't notice any difference in the boot. (I am sighted my roommate isn't.) The one thing I noticed is that attaching the synth didn't seem to cause it to start speaking. But I didn't play arround and there may be a way around that too.
