Soon after its release, users began complaining about network settings getting blown away, key Windows files being rewritten, and in some cases PCs becoming utterly inoperable. Some of the same problems are beginning to crop up with AOL 6.0, which launched last week. This is AOL's first client software designed to serve all of its dial-up, cable modem and DSL customers. San Jose, Calif.-based Finjan's SurfinShield Corporate monitors the behavior of executable programs synchronized from Palm Pilots to corporate PCs, according to a company release. The application looks for active Web content, such as ActiveX, Java scripts, and executable programs coming in over a synchronization link to a PDA, and prevents content that breaches security policies, such as attempting to delete a file or open a network connection.
