Slackware Bootdisk help

I'm trying to make a slackware bootdisk to run on a laptop. I began with
the bareapm.i configuration and compiled a kernel with speakup.
Slackware has a makedisk script which you use to make the bootdisk. I
thought I was on the right track until lilo came back with an error
message like:
"first boot sector has invalid lilo signature".
So I was left with a diskette with everything except lilo.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
