Couple of options here, Chuck. WV (formerly Wordview) has a utility that converts from Word to HTML. The HTML is kinda messy though, but readable in Lynx. However, my fave util is antiword, which dumps ASCII to stdout by default, but you can pipe through more or redirect to a file if you like. It's small. It's fast. It even works.
