Ack with my sparse Debian package maintainer hat on. If you check the Debian build logs (e.g. https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=sparse&arch=arm64&ver=0.5.1-2&stamp=1506419417&raw=0) you can see that the first relevant step after extracting the source tar and applying patches is to run make clean.
