How is this system doing PNP? BIOS, ACPI or ISA?
Does this device announce other compatible device ids?

I ask these questions because the typical approach used in PNP was
to declare a stack of compatible PNP ids, from most specific to
most general. Then the OS can load the best-fit driver that it has.

PNP0501 is nearly the most generic serial port PNP id possible.
