For the corner cases where /dev/<block dev> isn't the canonical name, you can find the actual /sys/block/<name> by getting the major:minor and scanning through /sys/block/*/dev The only other thing I'd note is that there's no connection between this value and the one returned by SG_GET_RESERVED_SIZE. The former is the max sectors per request. The latter is the size of the internal buffer used to build sg lists.
