qla1280 driver not working on AlphaStation 600 5/266

Hi,

I have a Digital AlphaStation 600 5/266, and I am trying to get kernel
2.6.15.3 running on it. I have however a problem with the qla1280 driver
for the SCSI controller. The only output I get is

qla1280: QLA1040 found on PCI bus 1, dev 2
qla1280: Failed mbox check
qla1280_mailbox_command: Command failed, mailbox0 = 0x0007, mailbox_out0 =
0x4003, istatus = 0x0000
m0 4003, m1 aaaa, m2 0000, m3 aa55
m4 55aa, m5 a5a5, m6 a5a5, m7 a5a5

...and booting naturally ends with a kernel panic because it cannot mount
the root filesystem.

I had used kernel 2.4.32 before and the qlogicisp driver in this kernel
works without problems. I have also patched the qlogicisp driver back
into kernel 2.6.15.3 (taken from 2.6.14), and this one works either,
except for some complaints about error handling at bootup.

Attached is the lspci output on this machine. The two ISP1020 chips are
located together with a Tulip Ethernet chip and a PCI bridge on a single,
long PCI card.

I'd also like to mention that the qla1280 driver works fine on an
AlphaStation 500 that has an on-board ISP1020. The only difference I can
see from the lspci output is that the ISP1020 chip in this machine has a
newer revision (02 instead of 01). Is it possible that the qla1280 driver
tries to use commands that are not supported on early 1020 chips?

Best regards

Alfred Arnold
