3.10-rc4: is acpiphp or in general pcieport or xhci_hcd ignoring my pcie_aspm=off?

Hi,
I know there are other who reported problems with ASPM. While still looking for
an answer what is the different between the three express cards I have, I see
that their use results in different pattern of changes to the upstream root port 1c.7.
Isn't the problem that pcieport of acpiphp-based kernel ignores my pcie_aspm=off ?

After coldboot with an empty express card slot I have:

In contrast, upon eject 'LnkCtl: ASPM Disabled' isn't changed back (see below lspci diff).
Well, thats good, but wasn't it already supposed to be 'Disabled' during bootup? Is pcieport or acpiphp
ignoring pcie_aspm=off?

Subsequent FireWire express card inserts&removals do not fidlle with 'LnkCtl: ASPM Disabled' of upstream
00:1c.7. Also the express card itself says 'LnkCtl: ASPM Disabled'. Now the system does what it was
asked to do during coldboot - to disable aspm. Good. ;)

If I exchange the express card and insert the eSATA card the upstream port 00:1c.7 touches 'BWMgmt':

- LnkCtl: ASPM Disabled; RCB 64 bytes Disabled- Retrain- CommClk-
+ LnkCtl: ASPM Disabled; RCB 64 bytes Disabled- Retrain- CommClk+

- LnkSta: Speed 2.5GT/s, Width x1, TrErr- Train- SlotClk+ DLActive- BWMgmt- ABWMgmt-
+ LnkSta: Speed 2.5GT/s, Width x1, TrErr- Train- SlotClk+ DLActive+ BWMgmt+ ABWMgmt-

The end device 11:00 itself reports 'LnkCtl: ASPM Disabled'.

Upon eject 1c.7 it does not restore to BWMgmt- (don't know what that really is):

- LnkSta: Speed 2.5GT/s, Width x1, TrErr- Train- SlotClk+ DLActive+ BWMgmt+ ABWMgmt-
+ LnkSta: Speed 2.5GT/s, Width x1, TrErr- Train- SlotClk+ DLActive- BWMgmt+ ABWMgmt-

Once I insert back the initially used FireWire card it lives with 'BWMgmt+' of the root port 1c.7.
Nobody cares it used to be initially 'BWMgmt-'.

Now, once I take into my hands the NEC-based express card, it fiddles more with upstream 1c.7 port,
or linux kernel does the job ;) :

- LnkCtl: ASPM Disabled; RCB 64 bytes Disabled- Retrain- CommClk+
+ LnkCtl: ASPM L0s L1 Enabled; RCB 64 bytes Disabled- Retrain- CommClk+
                        ExtSynch- ClockPM- AutWidDis- BWInt- AutBWInt-
- LnkSta: Speed 2.5GT/s, Width x1, TrErr- Train- SlotClk+ DLActive- BWMgmt+ ABWMgmt-
+ LnkSta: Speed 2.5GT/s, Width x1, TrErr- Train- SlotClk+ DLActive+ BWMgmt+ ABWMgmt-

Moreover, the end device 11:00 says 'LnkCtl: ASPM L0s L1 Enabled'. Hmm.

Then, once I eject the NEC-based card it leaves my root port 1c.7 with ASPM enabled.
At least in this moment I would have thought it should be restored into original
state, that is into 'Disabled':

Likewise, the end device 11:00 has again 'LnkCtl: ASPM L0s L1 Enabled'.

When I am too quick in grabbing snapshot of files upon hotremoval of the xHCI NEC-based card
I eventually trip over this intermediate step (which maybe helps you to see what is delaying
removal of the xhci_hcd device?):

After a while, the 'LnkCtl: ASPM L0s L1 Enabled' will be changed to 'LnkCtl: ASPM L1 Enabled'.
Is this maybe slow in my case because this 11:00 governed by xhci_hcd has 3 MSI-X interrupts
while the "onboard" TI xHCI host (0b:00 always saying 'LnkCtl: ASPM L1 Enabled') has different
3 MSI-X interrupts? Could there be an interference somewhere in the kernel? Is this related
to the ASPM mis-behavior? Well, in the past I already did test kernels with the USB3 TI host
controller disabled in BIOS so maybe hotremoval of a USB controller will just always be slower,
in the range of 15-25s. In the end, the sysfs entries are released as I said in another thread
already (Re: 3.8.2: stale pci device info for a previously inserted express card).

Thank you,
Martin
