Re: Question concerning 'lspci -xxxx'

Hi Matthew,

I've attached the output of dmesg. This is from the machine running Ubuntu 8.04 (kernel 2.6.24-27).

In the meantime, I've also tried a few different LiveCDs with more recent kernels (Fedora 12, Ubuntu 10.04rc, and Knoppix 6.2.1) and found that 'lspci -xxxx' works fine there. This seems to suggest that:

1. It's probably not a BIOS issue.
2. Whatever it is, it's been fixed in more recent kernel releases, so I
should probably leave you guys alone :-).

With that said, if anyone has an idea for a workaround, I'd still be interested to hear it. I've been doing this testing on a desktop in front of me, but the end goal is to get a dump from 'lspci -xxxx' on a remote machine that happens to be running Ubuntu 9.04. Fortunately, it's not very remote, so I can always head over there with a LiveCD if all else fails. In case it's useful, I can summarize my experience as follows:

Distro Kernel Works? System

CentOS 5.4 2.6.18-164.9.1 Yes A (dual Intel E5530)
Ubuntu 8.04 2.6.24-27 No B (Intel Q6600)
Ubuntu 9.04 2.6.31-15 No C (Intel i7-920)
Fedora 12 2.6.31.5-127 Yes B
Ubuntu 10.04rc 2.6.32-21 Yes B
Knoppix 6.2.1	2.6.32.6 Yes B

Incidentally, when I was checking my BIOS settings, I noticed that I had "Plug and Play O/S" set to "No." Changing this doesn't seem to make a difference, but I was just wondering what's considered best practice these days.

Best wishes,
Ron

I've tried installing the latest version of pciutils from source, with no
change. One thing that might be relevant is that Ubuntu 8.04 ships with
a much newer kernel (2.6.24-27) than the machine I'm comparing against
(CentOS 5.4, kernel version 2.6.18-164), where lspci behaves as expected.

Could you post dmesg from the failing machine? Chances are that the kernel
has decided that extended PCI config space is inaccessible (generally a BIOS
bug).

If there's a BIOS upgrade available, this may also help.
