What do you want the "." for?

A "." on a line by itself is called the "empty request" in *roff.  It
does nothing, but is preferred to a blank line for structuring a
document.

If you're trying to visually space the source document, then "." is what
you want.

If not, please clarify what you're trying to achieve, and I'll try to
help.  I have a little *roff knowledge.
