Helge :

Given that I have three HP Integrity Superdome ( black things )
laying about in my life do you know of any way to pull a single CPU
module ( shiney steel thing with a handle ) out of the HP refrigerator
and use it or am I trapped with the massive power requirements of the
whole black box?  Or is there some minimal PA-RISC hardware you could
suggest that would run the latest kernel and some userland?

I suspect removing unused bits might be a better approach.  However, Superdome is different
in some aspects.  I know Helge would love to get his hands on one to test.

The c8000, rp3410 and rp3440 are good choices to run PA-RISC linux. They can still be found on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/A7137A-HP-9000-rp3440-2x-1Ghz-PA-8800-CPU-8GB-2U-Rackmount-Server-/173226213196?_trksid=p2349526.m4383.l4275.c10#viTabs_0

Thing of beauty. I do see bare C8000 motherboards on ebay but no clue
what other bits are needed to get them workable. Whereas the superdomes
were rolled into the warehouse directly from a datacenter.

So for these monstrous superdomes in my warehouse I know that it is
trivial for me to set up some system to ssh into and then get a serial
connection to the superdome. What is seriously non-trivial and hellish
expensive is the power supply for these monsters. drat. :-\
