Yes ... changing the CONFIG_* symbol name should be a separate
patch, updating all the relevant defconfigs and coming after the
current merge problems get resolved.

My rule of thumb is move patches outside of arch/arm/...
upstream pretty much ASAP once they're ready.  The less
divergence, the easier all around ...
