I'm not a fan of the if/else status check here.  I think it might be cleaner if you match the style of nfs4_check_server_scope() and create an out_err label that prints the failed message and returns -EINVAL directly.  Then you can get rid of the "status" variable all together and avoid the if/else check at the end.
