I'll answer your questions as far as I can, but I myself am not familiar with Linux pnfs block server implementation.

No. Just export your data connection is enough, which for pnfs block can be iscsi/FS etc.

I don't think Linux pnfs block server implements separate DSes. So MDS/DS has to be on the same machine for it.

Largely yes. The wiki page has it that pnfs block server is based on spnfs.

But I'm not sure if the code still works.
