The preference is to backport an upstream patch. But Neil has
had success sending changes specific to particular LTS kernels.

I'd rather not embark on an effort to backport the pre-requisite
clean-up patches in that area unless it is absolutely necessary.

Then perhaps we should have annotated the "cc: stable" tag to
exclude the earlier LTS kernels.

If we believe that the problem will not appear in earlier LTS
kernels, I'm happy to leave this fix out of them for now.
