I would recommend running Fedore Desktop if you are concerned about
compatibility as I believe they pretty much put the newer kernel releases
into Fedora.

Subject: Questions regarding Whiskey Lake support in Linux LTS kernel 4.19.*

Dear Linux community!

I am currently considering buying a new laptop with an Intel processor, and
I am concerned with Linux compatibility. My distribution of choice is Debian
Stable, which currently has kernel 4.19.37, so I will most probably run
kernels 4.19.* for next three years.

I am currently facing a choice between Intel Core i5 8250u (Kaby Lake R) and
8265u (Whiskey Lake). I would prefer the latter if I was sure it will run
fine with 4.19. As an attempt to determine if support for Whiskey Lake in
4.19 is ok, I tried opening [1], [2], searching for "whl" and "whiskey" and
inspecting all the commits which are in 5.2.8 but not in 4.19.37. My
expertise level is "an advanced user but not a developer", and it seems to
me, that [3] and [4] are not of crucial importance for Whiskey Lake support,
but I am unable to evaluate the importance of [5] and [6] on my own due to
lack of expertise. Apart from those 4 commits mentioned above, there were
many commits related to "Whiskey Cove PMIC", and I couldn't find any
information on whether it is related to Whiskey Lake CPUs or not. In
addition, I may have skipped something because my method (browsing search
results in git web-interface) may be suboptimal.

Could you please tell me if Whiskey Lake CPUs (precisely: Intel Core i5
8265u) should run nicely with Linux kernel 4.19 (precisely: 4.19.37)?

Thanks in advance!

Yours, Sergey Protserov.
