In my case the problem only happens when the client is a Mac and NAT
is in the way; in one case it is a Vyatta box, in other cases it is
people's home routers.  The 'fix' was to turn off tcp_timestaps on the
Linux end, or to turn off rfc1323 on the Mac side.

Which leaves me curious if this is a common problem that is being
ignored. You can find a fair bit of chat about it through google.
