I'm new to Kubuntu and I'm realizing that it is quite different from RH, with
many little helpers being overly helpful. Under RH I always feel I'm in
control, but here I have no idea what is going on behind my back.

After starting over I got it working. Apparently the br0 interface (added for
Sun's xVM) somehow killed things. At one point my eth0 could ping the gw on
the LAN but not google, as if it said only 1 hop. Once I got rid of br0 I got
it to work.

I hate to see what happens when I try to get my VM's network back up again...
