Complete Network Loss

Hello!

I experience complete loss of connectivity several times a day,
especially when transferring files and not just surfing the internet.

When the problem occurs tcpdump does not show a single incoming packet.
I tested this with my Intel card (e1000) and my onboard VIA card
(Velocity Gigabit). Restarting (ifconfig eth0 down/up) the Intel card
solves the problem (for at least several minutes), for the VIA card this
does not help.

After two minutes without connectivity dmesg shows that some application
(e.g. rsync) is stalled, but gives no further information.

Kernel 2.6.26.3 (problem also existed with 2.6.26).

I also tried another cable, another switch and other components in the
network. I can't see any correlation (the problem persists).

Please tell me what causes this problem and how I can (help to) solve it.

Thanks a lot,
