atl1 not working as expected

Hi All,

after installing Ubuntu Hardy / i386 today, I found a very strange
phenomenon related to the NIC in my main PC which happens to be an
"Attansic L1 Gigabit Ethernet" on an Asus P5K MoBo. Here's what
happens: I installed from scratch, only reusing my /home partition.
After installation, I find that all seems to be ok network wise -
ifconfig says I have an ip address... - only I can't connect to any web
server on the net. I can ping various addresses, but when I try to open
http://www.google.com/ in Firefox, it kind of times out and tells me
the connection was interrupted. This is true for all sites that I've
tried so far.

I have now replaced my router with another model I have set aside and
after using this one, all works ok. Now one could assume that the
router is faulty but all other PCs (about half a dozen at the moment)
on my network can access the web alright using the other router. Even
when I boot Windows XP on the mentioned PC, all is working - going back
to Hardy, it's not. Meanwhile I've found that the same issue creeps up
with Gutsy (Live-CD) as well so my assumption is it has something to do
with the network driver that's being used (atl1 v2.0.7).

Have any of you had a similar experience? And did you find a solution?
Where could I start searching for a resolution? Any help will be
appreciated.

Cheers,

Roland
