I remotely remember something like this on a legacy i440bx board running a 
2.4 kernel.  It was really weird.  It had something to do with acpi and 
lapic and shared interrupts.  The solution was to reserve irq 9 as 
non-pnp/non-pci in the bios, which basically allowed acpi to be the sole 
user and force the ne2k card to pick another irq on bios bootup before 
running the kernel.

Marcin, what irq layout does your bios report on bootup?
