configuring dhcp

hi,
I've configured dhcp server on a sys and client on
another. When I ran dhcp, the client would get an ip
from server. This means dhcp is properly configured.
Is it? But then, when I say ifconfig, the same old ip
shows up and not the one given by dhcp server.
Apparantly, ping for that ip(given by dhcp server)
would fail. Could anyone help me figure out this
thing?
Thanks
