For the record, this has been solved by loading the modules without
specifying irq or address.  Specifically, instead of 'modprobe
parport_pc io=0x378 irq=7' which causes a kernel message "parport
0x378: You gave this address, but there is probably no parallel port
there!", I use 'modprobe parport_pc' and everything works.
