Knowing different network interfaces of the system

Hi all,

I have 2 queries ;

1. How to find out the different network interfaces on the system in a
C program. ( assuming more than 1 network interfaces are present in
the system.) i.e, are there any system calls or any mechanism of
knowing this in a program.
(NOT BY SHELL COMMAND ifconfig or so.. )

2. How to know the Layer 3 protocol running on the netowork interface.
