The thing with 4-port nics is that they use all four hardware interrupt
lines on the motherboard. Since the vast majority of pci cards only use
one, using the other three tends to expose problems in marginal
motherboards. (That's how I understand it, anyway. I'm no PCI expert,
but I've seen similar problems with 4-port tulip, sundance, and e1000
cards).

Are you using ACPI? I happen to have an older Via Epia board, and I've
noticed that it disables one of the 4 interrupt lines completely in the
bootup messages. I don't claim to understand what that means, but it
sounds like bad news if you're trying to use all four.
