If you want to do this for the root filesystem then you need to either a) Use a BOOTP/DHCP server which translates the server name into IP in the response. b) Use a initramdisk to mount the root, using the resolver information found in /proc/net/pnp to resolve the server name into an IP address for the kernel to use.
