Then, one day, netstat wont use /proc/net/tcp anymore...Don't duplicate work, the info is available, via netlink socket dumping. See net/ipv4/tcp_diag.c
On a loaded machine, and 500.000 sockets alive, "cat /proc/net/tcp" is a killer...
ss program is not well known, it's a pity.
