clear facts on rp_filter WRT ip_forward and documentation?

Hi all,

/me could not find definitive statements on the behaviour of rp_filter. Kernel
documentation, runtime observations and common pratice in distros do not
match.

Formal question: valid values? Documentation/networking/ip-sysctl.txt reports
only boolean range - i can clearly remember doc fragments in google listing
'2' for stricter checkings.

Default value? Above-mentioned probably outdated docs say '1' -
observing /proc tells a different story.

Black magic - if i turn on ip_forward, is rp_filter then automagically active
too? Keeping track of a running system's /proc dir did not reveal any
indication of this.

Sorry for my plumpy questions,

best regards, Marcus
