OK, but what's the user-level ? Fedora Core by any chance ? If so, could 
you disable kudzu (chkconfig kudzu off), reboot, and try again ?

Yes, but the detection is correct. In the detection message there is a 
good MAC address, only afterwards the things start to look broken. And the 
driver doesn't touch the EEPROM after the initialization phase.

Not in the detection message that you posted, where MAC address is 
00:c0:4f:fb:11:54.
