There is a bad interaction between the 3c59x driver with these cards and 
RedHat's kudzu (hardware probing utility). There are several open bugs in 
RedHat's bugzilla about it, but no clear idea about what is going on.
I say above "with these cards" because I have not heard Tornado cards 
(905C) to be affected, only Boomerang and some Cyclones (905B).
One easy solution is to disable kudzu at boot and start it manually as 
root only after making a hardware change then reboot again.
