Apparently the lockups are unrelated; today I received 4000 lines of
kernel backtrace mentioning bad_page and the machine rebooted (by
itself or by the watchdog).

I also changed the PSU from 430W to 550W, in the assumption the former
was insufficient. Well, no errors/frame-errors yet, although one boot
failed to get the link up and crashed on reloading of the module.
